Creative Writing at Sandal Castle

Interesting Finds

Excavation work on the castle was carried out between 1964 and 1973. During the excavations many of the overgrown stonework was uncovered, and the moat was completely dug out.

Archaeologists discovered many artefacts including jars of medicines, clay pipes, cannon balls, and horseshoes.

The most interesting finds were a gold and enamel ring with the words "I am all yours" engraved on it, and nine skeletons found buried outside the wall of the castle kitchen.

  • What are the stories behind these two finds?

  • What happened to the owner of the ring?

  • Who were the people buried outside the castle and why did they die?
