Description:
Abbeydale is a unique water powered scythe and steel making works. It is a grade 1 listed building and scheduled ancient monument and is of local and national importance a historic site. The houses, workshops, crucible steel furnaces, waterwheels, tilt hammer and machinery date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Records suggest that manufacturing activity took place on site from at least 1714 and possibly as early as 1685. It was a major industrial complex for its time, bringing together a number of local trades on the same site. It was one of the largest water powered sites on Sheffield's River Sheaf. Work continued at Abbeydale Until 1933 when Tyzack Sons & Turner ceased production on the site. The Hamlet was temporarily re-opened during the Second World War to produce steel for the war effort.
