Boys Wearing Shorts Made From a Single Kilt

After WW2, Guides on the Guide International Service supported mothers in displaced persons camps to do the best they could for their children, including teaching them make do and mend skills.

These five boys are wearing shorts made from a single kilt; there was a big shortage of warm clothing and shoes for children and infants. Guides in Britain collected oddments of wool and woollen garments; these were unravelled and re-knitted in the camps. Old felt hats were turned into infants' shoes; sandals were made from old car tyres and soles made from wood from Red Cross packing cases.
