WW1 Land Girls, near Leeds
This photograph, taken during the First World War, shows three young women working hard in a field at Manor Farm, near Garforth in Leeds. They are cleaning a pile of mangels to be used for animal feed. Their heads are protected by bonnets and they are wearing long aprons. They may have been enrolled on a course to gain practical farming skills. These two-week courses for women were run during the First World War to train women to take over jobs in agriculture as more and more men left to join the armed forces.
