Miners Resting During Stoppage of Conveyer Belts by Henry Moore, 1942
Henry Moore is one of the most famous British artists and sculptors of the twentieth century. During the Second World War, he was commissioned by the War Artists Advisory Committee to draw scenes of the Home Front. This drawing depicts a scene at Wheldale Colliery in Castleford, Moore's hometown and the colliery where his father had been employed. The anonymous miners are kneeling in the darkness, resting while the belt which collects the coal has been paused.
Pen, ink, coloured chalk, wax resist and gouache.
