Page From 17th Century Book ‘A Token for Children’
Written by Puritan minister, James Janeway, ‘A Token for Children’ was designed to instil good behaviour in children by putting the fear of God into them. The book contains the stories of the deaths of 13 children. It was published at a time when child mortality was much higher and people’s attitudes to death were very different. People were also a lot more religious, and everyone had to go to church by law. Note that the lowercase ‘s’ looks very much like an ‘f’ in writing and printing at this time.
