Pages From 18th Century ‘The Negro’s Complaint’ by William Cowper
William Cowper wrote this poem in 1788 in support of the abolition of slavery. Originally written for adults, this version with colourful woodcut illustrations, was most probably published to appeal to children. Historically, the word ‘negro’ was used to denote people of African origin. It is often considered an offensive term today, and is used here only in its historical context.
