1919 School Magazine Article by Myfanwy Williams being read by Eirian James
Eirian James speaks the words of Myfanwy Williams in the July 1919 Dr Williams' School magazine about the entertainment that had taken place at the military hospital in October 1918:
October twelfth proved a most eventful day for a small party of mistresses and girls who went up to Caerynwch Military Hospital to entertain the wounded. Miss Lawford and Dr John Jones kindly lent their cars to convey some of the party, while the very energetic ones walked.
Programmes had been made by two girls, who distributed them amongst a most appreciative audience; in fact the girls were asked for their signatures more than once. The concert was a great success, several items being encored.
The stage was most tastefully decorated for the occasion. After the concert, all went out into the garden for tea. Girls and soldiers sat alternately around three tables, where Miss Maslin’s shortbread was in great demand, while French conversation flowed freely. One sergeant was heard to say, 'Passez le sucre,' and then 'Passez le ... oh pass me a sandwich!'
After tea the girls gave a few more items, then the soldiers gave a concert. They were attired in camouflaged pyjamas, with frills and pompoms of DWS colours. One of the chief items was a song called 'Burglar Jim', which was most thrilling. One song 'When you’re a long long way from home', brought tears to many eyes, the loneliness of the boys in France seemed so real. Every one then joined in the chorus of 'Goodbye-ee', which was sung most heartily, the soldiers had a version of their own.
After this preparations for departures were made, much to the regret of the soldiers, who wanted a dance as a finale; but time did not permit. Amidst great cheers the party returned home, having enjoyed themselves immensely. The following week, all the girls went to the mens Pierrot concert, in the public rooms. A special matinee had been given, especially for their benefit. Needless to say, they all enjoyed themselves immensely.
