Roman Stone Antefix

This mask from Lanuvium, Italy, is part of an antefix (a stone block placed at the end of a tiled roof). It is in the style of a comic mask, depicting a face with a menacing grin and hair hanging down in long bedraggled strands. It is made of red clay and there are traces of red paint on the lips and eyebrows.
