Diagram of Enslaved People on a Slave Ship, 1854

Diagram of the interior of a slave ship carrying enslaved people from West Africa to the West Indies. The kidnapped people had very little room to move and were shackled together. The conditions were horrific and brutal.

This diagram appeared in the book 'Africa and the American Flag' by Andrew Hull Foote, in 1854. Foote attempted to suppress the slave trade during his time as commander of the ship 'Perry'.
