Middleton Colliery, Leeds 1909

The area that is now Middleton Park was not always lush and green. It was a centre of industry and manufacture, and much of the land was a colliery. This view is from a slag heap at the colliery and you can see the winding gear, buildings and cable car. In Middleton Park you can see collapsed shafts, which look like craters or hollows, from the path between Middleton Railway and the playground.
