Portrait of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus, Empress Julia Domna and their child

This portrait of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus with his wife, Julia Domna and their child is painted using tempera on a wood panel. Severus was born in present day Libya. When he brought the Roman army to Britain in 208 CE he would have been the first Black person that many Britions would have seen. Severus ruled the Roman Empire from the city of Eboracum (present day York) for three years and during this time the city saw soldiers from many areas of the Empire, and goods such as spices traded from Africa.
