Reconstruction of a cross-section of a Roman road

This modern reconstruction of a Roman road shows how a mixture of different sizes of stones pack down tightly to form a stable structure. The metal ‘cages’ here are used to keep the stones in place for show, the Romans didn’t use metal cages like this as the roads were built into the land.
