This page is from a scrapbook dating between 1838 - 1873. The book includes cuttings of prints, woodcuts, advertisements and product labels. This page shows adverts for two circus acts, one involving and elephant and one involving lions. 

Most circuses do not use animals in their acts any more. Why do you think this might be?
