What is echolocation used for?

Nature inspiring technology

Humans are constantly learning from the natural world, and our technology is often inspired by adaptations and behaviours that we observe in animals. In this case, studying echolocation helped to develop SONAR technology.

Submarine SONAR Mimics Animal Echolocation

SONAR works almost exactly the same as a bat’s echolocation, sending out sound waves and listening for their reflected echo. Submarines are famous for using this method of navigation to find their way around underwater.
