Learning to Dance in Leeds

Have you ever wanted to dance around your room with the music on full blast? Or learn a new dance move to show your friends?

The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Phoenix Dance or Northern Ballet or Yorkshire Dance are some of the larger well known organisations that offer dance training and performance. Can you find out where else you can learn to dance and what kinds of dance there are?

A 'Leeds Dance Ladder' PDF can be downloaded from the 'Resources' section, showing dance services, education and development routes in Leeds.

What you may not know is that a teacher called called Nadine Senior inspired many dancers through her work teaching dance in schools in Leeds in the 1970s and 80s.

David Hamilton, Donald Edwards and Vilmore James, who were all taught in school and inspired by Nadine, went on to set up their own dance company, Phoenix Dance in 1981. And Nadine herself set up the Northern School of Contemporary dance in 1985.

Huge commerative celebrations followed her death in 2016.

She had had such an impact on so many people’s lives that after her death there was much sadness.
