Learning Objectives
- By using this resource younger pupils will understand the range of household duties carried out by Victorian Servants and how household chores and the equipment used differ from those today.
- In addition older pupils will have learnt how a document such as a census can help us research and make links to the past. (Census returns of 1871, 1881 and 1891 can be downloaded from the Resources page ).
The resource can be used by teachers to support a visit to Shibden Hall, or as an introduction to exploring the life of the Victorian servant in the classroom.
Activity Ideas
- Play the Victorian Children's Jobs interactive to find out which job you'd be (un)lucky enough to have as a child in Victorian times.
